I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.
I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.
To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.
I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.
“I love secrets and I’m good at finding them. For the last two years, I’ve sat and waited and watched. I’ve learned to collect secrets, one by one, because secrets are flames and no place deserves to burn more than my small town”
Lilah Calloway doesn’t have the easiest life. Secrets are huge part of her life and the center of the story. Something happened to her family and it was reported for the whole town to read. She never dealt with her grief properly and just went along with life. She moved away from her home two years ago and now she returns. She isn’t comfortable with coming back but she has to. From the beginning, you can tell that she was lost and she felt unlovable. I think the best way to describe her is broken. She doesn’t know how to deal with all her emotions and feelings. But I love that she still fights every day.
Chase Matthews’ life is intertwined with Lilah’s since he was born. Their mothers were bestfriends and so were they. He was the one who knows and understands Lilah the most. There’s so much history between the two and it’s not always pleasant. The tragedy that happened didn’t only strucked Lilah’s family but also his. Chase himself is dealing with his own feelings but despite all that, Lilah and him still connect and it’s hard for them to ignore that.
Lilah keeps convincing herself that she doesn’t deserve Chase and Chase deserves better.
“I love the golden boy. I woke up loving him and I drifted to sleep loving him, but having that love returned, letting that love blossom wasn’t a possibility. Even if we could work our way through our past, no one thought I was good enough for him – and honestly, I wasn’t”
However, Chase doesn’t want to let her go and keeps trying to show her that he loves her and only wants her.
R.S Grey is one of my favourite authors. I’ve read all her books and loved every single one so of course I’ll read this one as well. For me, this is the most surprising of all her books. I am so used to her romcom books that I was not expecting this one to be so emotional. Grief, heartache, forgiveness, love, and hope are all here. The characters in the book each went through different things. Chase and Lilah went through more than anyone at their age should have and are forced to be mature beyond their age. The theme of secrets in this book makes everything more exciting. I found myself flipping every page, wanting to know what actually happened. R.S. Grey’s way of writing makes the story more intriguing and gripping. I know that this is a story that I will remember for a long time and it also shows how versatile R.S. Grey is in her writing.
This is a truly thought provoking story. I really recommend this book to everyone, a must read!
